How psychology is linked with law?
CONNECTING PSYCHOLOGY WITH LAW!!!!
Ever thought about why people
do the things they do, why do some people break stuff when they are angry and most importantly why do people break laws
and why do people follow law??
All the answers to these why
we can get from psychology.
After hearing this word
psychology the first thing that will come in our mind is “what is psychology?”
So, if we start from
basics. Psychology is the study of human
mind - why we think, feel and behave the way we do. And if we talk about law,
it’s all about following the rules for the society to run smoothly. Psychology
and law might seem seek like two different worlds, but they can actually come
together in a pretty interesting way.
To answer the question mentioned above, why do
people break law? Psychologists came into picture to figure that out.
For example: let’s assume
someone steals something. Now the question comes in our head why did they do
it? Maybe they felt desperate or saw it as an easy way to get what they wanted
or maybe it’s because of their upbringing, mental health issues. By
understanding all these things, psychologists can help to come up with the
strategies to prevent similar types of crime in future.
Psychology isn’t just useful
in preventing crime but also helps during legal proceedings (like in trials). If we talk about
trials, a witness plays an important role in telling the court what actually
happened. But the thing is: our memories aren’t always perfect; we tend to
forget a lot of things. And memory is influenced by many other factors also.
That’s when psychology helps. Psychologists can study memory and tell if the
testimony of the witness is accurate or not.
Now, let’s talk about
forensic psychology, which is like something out from a crime thriller movie.
These specialists use psychological principles to solve crime cases. They
analyse crime scene, profile suspects and even evaluate defendant’s mental
state.
Ultimately, psychology helps
to make the legal system more fair and effective. By understanding human
behaviour, we can ensure that the justice is served while also addressing the
underlying issues that lead to the crime.
So, the next time if you hear
about psychology and law, remember that they can make our society better and
safer by working together. It’s a powerful partnership that will benefit all of
us.
